Alarms on the pitch, less so off-field for Our Man in France...

(Almost) LIVE from Lille, Day 2 of the EuroHockey Champs!

Days 2 at the EuroHockey Club Champions Trophy got off to a bad start. I woke up late having not set my alarm correctly. On running downstairs I thought hard for excuses to save me from a fine, only to find the squad weren't at breakfast.

It transpired that my smart phone, that was so smart I couldn't change the time on it yesterday, had in fact changed itself overnight. The good news was I wasn't fined, the bad news was that I could still be in bed. After breakfast there was a quick meeting before heading off to the pitch for the opening match of the tournament.
On arriving at the pitch extremely early to avoid potential holiday traffic the tournament official conducted an equipment check. Now no tournament would be complete with out the mandatory falling out with the organizing officials. Last nights squad meeting had highlighted a number of rule changes that the squad were made aware of.

Willie Marshall, opening scorer for Kelburne

This morning it appeared that an item of safety kit used by players at short corners was deemed illegal by the tournament director. This same item of kit had been allowed in all previous competitions including european games, however after a prolonged debate it was decided that we would not be allowed to use the protective item. This proved to be irrelevant as Kelburne ran out 5-1 winners, and failed to concede a short corner. Goal scorers were, Willie Marshall, Johnny Christie, Alan Forsythe and Mark Ralph (2). Following the match the players cooled down and relaxed eating their lunch.

On returning to the hotel I opened the post match treatment clinic lasting 2 hours, to try and deal with any niggles the players may have. Annoyingly there was one injury during the game that whilst not too serious, will rule the player out for the duration of the rest of the tournament. The player was retuning from a hamstring strain and had successfully completed all the fitness tests yesterday regarding sprinting up to and including 100%, rapid deceleration and acceleration runs, as well as joining the rest of the squad for small sided games and shooting drills. Clinically he had full movement and was pain free on resisted exercises.

The plan was to use him sparingly only 10mins in the first half and 10 mins in the second half, however after sprinting the length of the pitch, and then rapidly changing direction to take a player on, he pulled up but was able to walk off the pitch. He was then treated following the PRICE guidelines, before receiving additional treatment back at the hotel. Fortunately the strain does not appear too serious.
